# Premature Plant Death Due to Drought Stress: Insult to Injury (Purdue University)

> Purdue agronomist Bob Nielsen reports that late-planted, shallow-rooted corn in parts of Indiana is dying prematurely after dry soils and above-normal temperatures in September. Kernel abortion and smaller kernels have already cut grain yield in affected fields. Stressed plants shut down before reaching full grain fill.

## Why it matters

Premature death and kernel loss reduce the US corn crop and tighten feed grain supplies at the margin. That supports corn prices and raises feed costs for buyers in the affected Corn Belt region.
