# Dire prediction for SA beef exports after foot-and-mouth outbreak

> South Africa could lose up to $140m in 2020 in beef exports as regional countries restrict imports because of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak first reported in 2019. The disease has also spread to the wool sector, and the drought is worsening conditions for farmers.

## Why it matters

Export bans reduce demand for South African cattle and push domestic beef prices down. Ongoing restrictions also limit trade flows of animal products.
