# Turned-down temperatures boost crops’ penchant for production | College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences | Illinois

> A University of Illinois-led study in Global Change Biology found that about 16% of the yield gain from irrigation comes from the cooling effect on crops, separate from the soil water supply. The researchers developed a method to isolate that cooling effect from soil moisture.

## Why it matters

Irrigation's value to yields is partly thermal, which matters more as droughts and warming increase. This is a research finding without an immediate effect on supply or prices.
