# Indiana Trains Prisoners To Combat Avian Flu

> Indiana is training up to 300 low-level prisoners to cull and dispose of poultry infected with avian flu. The state is also banning co-mingling of birds at fairs and other gatherings. Avian flu strains have killed about 10% of the US laying flock and 7% of the turkey flock.

## Why it matters

Losses of laying hens and turkeys reduce demand for poultry feed and shift feed demand across the sector. Ongoing outbreaks keep supply tight, which supports egg prices but cuts feed volumes.
