# 2020 Shipping Season Over for Upper Mississippi River

> The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the 2020 navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River when the tow Colonel passed through Lock 2 at Hastings, Minnesota, on Nov. 30. Winter maintenance at Lock and Dam 4 begins Dec. 7 and runs to March 14. The 2020 season ran more smoothly than the flood-plagued 2019 season.

## Why it matters

The seasonal closure removes Upper Mississippi barge capacity until spring, so Upper Midwest grain must move by rail or truck, which keeps barge freight costs firm over the winter.
