# USDA Confirms Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Two Dairy Herds in Washington

> The USDA's APHIS NVSL confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 clade 2.3.4.4b by PCR in two dairy cattle herds in Washington, after the herds showed clinical signs. The herds had tested negative through routine National Milk Testing Strategy surveillance before this detection. These are the first confirmed livestock HPAI detections in Washington, and APHIS is sequencing the virus and conducting on-farm investigations.
