# Bird flu indoor rule hits free range egg farmer incomes - DutchNews.nl

> Hundreds of Dutch free-range egg producers can no longer label their eggs as free range after hens were confined indoors for 16 weeks due to bird flu. Farmers' lobby LTO estimates a loss of around €5,000 a week for the sector. Some supermarkets will keep paying the free-range price, but exports will not.

## Why it matters

Confinement rules shift output from premium free-range to barn-egg grades, lowering farm-gate egg values. Reduced egg export access for Dutch producers adds to pressure on EU egg prices.
