# The National Directorate of Animal Health, in response to the unusual increase in cases of New World Screwworm in the Province of Darién, announces – COPEG

> Panama's National Directorate of Animal Health declared a New World Screwworm outbreak in Darién province after 749 cases, with 33 more positives in nearby Panama province communities. Officials attributed the rise to poor prevention and wound treatment in livestock, and the region is a vulnerable entry point from South America.

## Why it matters

A screwworm outbreak in the Central American livestock corridor can trigger animal-movement restrictions and cattle trade disruption, modestly tightening regional beef supply. The effect on U.S. prices is limited because the sterile fly barrier is aimed at keeping the pest out of North America.
