# The Amazon region in 2022 and 2023: deforestation, forest degradation and the risk of growing soy production - Joint Research Centre

> A Joint Research Centre report finds the Amazon lost more than 35,000 km2 of intact humid forest in 2022 through deforestation and degradation, about 15% more than in 2021. Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell by almost 50% in the first 10 months of 2023, while other Amazon countries showed mixed trends. The report also examines the risk that expanding soy production poses to forests.
