# Why are eggs so expensive? : NPR

> Retail egg prices have risen about 28% over the past year, with a dozen large Grade A eggs averaging $3.20 in August according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rise follows large bird flu outbreaks at Colorado chicken farms in July, and demand is also increasing ahead of the holiday baking season.

## Why it matters
