# Screwworm outbreak cripples cattle trade, costs jobs and raises beef prices

> The closure of the Santa Teresa cattle crossing due to screwworm has cut trade and jobs in the El Paso area. One cattle trucking firm reports 80% of its trucks idle and 150 drivers laid off. The crossing handled 62% of US-Mexico cattle and horse trade in 2022, valued at over $600 million.
