# India imposes new condition on non-basmati rice exports

> India now requires non-basmati rice exporters to register contracts with APEDA before shipping, according to a DGFT notification issued October 3, 2025. The government says the rule will improve oversight of volumes and destinations. Officials also cited concerns about mis-declaration of rice type.

## Why it matters

Added registration adds paperwork and a possible delay for shipments, which could slightly slow export flows. The effect on global rice prices is likely minor.
