# How are fertilizer markets coping with the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz? | CGIAR System

> Fertilizer shipments out of the Persian Gulf remain largely halted more than six months after the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Nitrogen prices have eased back toward pre-war levels, while sulfur shortages keep phosphate supply tight. Global nitrogen and phosphate exports have fallen only about 9%, as exporters outside the Gulf have filled part of the gap.

## Why it matters

Persian Gulf urea and ammonia are a large share of world nitrogen trade, so renewed disruption could lift urea prices again in seasonal demand. Sulfur-driven phosphate tightness raises DAP production costs and supports prices, which feeds into feed-phosphate costs.
