# How to stop the bird flu outbreak becoming a pandemic | Nature

> A Nature news explainer describes rising concern that bird flu could spark a human pandemic, after a fatal human case in Cambodia and mammal-to-mammal spread on a mink farm. It notes that more than 50 million poultry in the US and a similar number in Europe have died or been culled since the start of 2022. The article discusses measures such as wild bird tracking and updated human vaccines.

## Why it matters

Large poultry losses since 2022 tighten chicken and egg supply and support feed demand from poultry producers. A human pandemic would be a larger shock, but the article presents this as a risk rather than a current market event.
