# Removing Nontariff Import Barriers Could Increase China’s Imports of Pork, Beef, Corn, and Wheat, ERS Research Shows

> A USDA Economic Research Service study estimates that removing China's nontariff barriers would raise its imports of beef, corn, pork and wheat. The study uses mid-2020 to mid-2021 data, which showed Chinese domestic prices above U.S. import prices by 57.5% for beef, 64% for corn, 213% for pork and 42% for wheat. China imported more than $205 billion in agricultural products in 2021, including over $37 billion from the U.S.

## Why it matters

The findings point to latent Chinese import demand for U.S. corn and wheat if trade barriers ease, but the study is a scenario analysis and does not itself change current flows.
