Macquarie Oil Company is a company located in the northern midlands of Tasmania which currently cold presses canola and poppy oil from the respective locally produced seed crops. Poppy seed is a by-product of the alkaloid extraction process carried out in Tasmania and is currently buried to biodegrade while the canola is contracted from local farmers and is also available for import from the mainland in the case of a desperate shortage. The canola oil and meal are sold as high value stock feed, the poppy meal has potential as a stock feed or agricultural fertilizer and the poppy oil is further refined to a state where it can be used as biodiesel.
