Colorado State University economist Stephen Koontz told producers that heavier cattle production will keep prices low unless consumption grows, projecting fed cattle at $1.30 to $1.35 and feeders at $1.30 to $1.70 per pound for at least two years. He said beef exports will be needed to absorb the extra production, with Japan the largest market.
Expected herd expansion and retained heifers mean more beef supply, which is bearish for cattle prices over the next couple of years. Export demand is the key offset that could support the market.
