The December Dairy Market Report from DMI and NMPF showed many key US milk and dairy prices at their highest levels in nearly five years. The September all-milk price of $19.30 per hundredweight was the highest since December 2014.
Drivers included a shrinking US cow herd, rising milk per cow, strong domestic demand, and the end of EU skim milk powder stock liquidation, partly offset by weaker exports due to China's swine fever and the trade war.
A smaller US milk supply combined with firm demand supports higher dairy prices and farm income, which can encourage stronger feed purchases. The report indicates the supply tightening is expected to taper off in a few months.
