USDA data show transportation costs for corn and soybeans shipped from Minneapolis to Japan fell 23% for corn and 21% for soybeans via the Gulf route in the third quarter, mainly on lower barge and trucking rates. Costs via the Pacific Northwest rose on higher rail and ocean freight rates, and landed costs for corn decreased quarter over quarter.
Lower Gulf-route costs make US corn and soybeans more competitive into Asian markets, while higher PNW ocean and rail rates weigh on that route. The analysis reflects past quarters rather than new shocks.
