A viewpoint from the Alliance for Science criticizes Mexico's government under President López Obrador for opposing GM crops. It says the administration appointed anti-GMO figures to key posts and shifted CONACYT funding away from biotechnology.
The piece also says a national ban on GM corn, pursued through legal action by environmental NGOs, has blocked farmers from tools needed to handle heat and drought.
Continued restrictions on biotech corn could limit Mexico's future domestic supply growth and keep its import needs high. Because this is commentary rather than a new regulation, it is unlikely to move prices on its own.
