Mexico decreed on December 31 that genetically modified corn grain will be phased out of human consumption by January 31, 2024, and that glyphosate use will also be phased out. US corn farmers are concerned that US corn exports to Mexico could take a major hit.
The US Grains Council says it is still unclear whether the ban covers corn used for livestock feed.
Mexico is the largest buyer of US corn and most of its imports are GMO, so any restriction that reaches feed corn would cut US export demand and pressure CORN prices lower. The unresolved scope keeps a risk premium in the market until officials clarify it.
