New World screwworm moved north in Mexico and closed the U.S.-Mexico border to live cattle in July 2025. Feedyards in Texas that rely on Mexican cattle are running at around 70% of capacity, and Mexican cattle are selling at about half their usual price.
The closure cuts feeder cattle supply into U.S. feedlots, which supports feeder prices. Excess cattle on the Mexican side are depressing local values.
