The rand strengthened 0.5% to 17.14 per dollar after muted US economic data raised expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut in December. The dollar fell 0.2% against a basket of currencies, and the Johannesburg Top-40 index rose 1.3%.
Expectations of Fed easing weaken the dollar, which tends to support dollar-priced commodities and firm emerging-market currencies. The effect on feed prices is indirect and modest.
