USDA's APHIS announced plans to expand H5N1 testing and monitoring in dairy cattle, using a tiered strategy of milk sampling developed with state veterinarians. The agency said a May 2024 federal order requiring pre-movement testing had cut the number of states with dairy detections from 14 to two over the prior 30 days.
USDA also cited bulk milk testing precedent, including Colorado's statewide program.
Tighter dairy testing and biosecurity could reduce herd infections and raw milk movement disruptions, which is a modest supply-side factor for dairy-linked feed demand. The effect on feed prices is likely limited.
