Morgan Stanley and ING analysts expect the Japanese yen to strengthen further as the US dollar weakens, with Morgan Stanley forecasting 101 yen per dollar by the fourth quarter from 112.64 at the start of 2018. The yen has risen about 4.73% since January 1, and the dollar has lost its safe-haven appeal.
An IHS Markit economist warned that sustained yen strength could prompt verbal intervention from Japanese policymakers.
A weaker dollar generally supports dollar-priced commodities such as grains and oilseeds, so continued dollar weakness is a mild bullish factor for feed prices. Yen strength would also affect Japanese feed import costs.
