Indian non-basmati rice exports fell 14.56% in FY2019 to 7.534 million tonnes. The decline is attributed to a higher minimum support price for paddy, which made Indian rice uncompetitive against Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Pakistan.
The 5% MEIS export incentive was discontinued on March 25, 2019, and exporters are seeking its renewal.
Lower Indian export volumes reduce supply in the world rice market and tend to support Asian rice prices. If the MEIS incentive is not renewed, further export declines are likely.
