The EU Council adopted conclusions on protecting and restoring the world's forests, asking the Commission to fast-track an assessment of demand-side measures to reduce the EU's land consumption footprint. Member states stressed that current global action is insufficient to halt deforestation.
Possible future EU regulation on deforestation-linked imports could raise compliance costs and affect demand for palm oil, soy and other commodities from forest-risk regions, but no binding measure is yet proposed.
