The European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on 15 September 2020 (543 votes to 47, 109 abstentions) calling for binding EU targets to protect forests, especially primary forests. MEPs also urged deforestation-free supply chains and trade agreements with binding anti-deforestation provisions.
If the Commission adopts deforestation-free import rules, soy, palm oil, beef and other forest-risk commodities sold into the EU could face compliance costs and sourcing restrictions, tightening supply of compliant feed proteins over time.
