The European Parliament formally requested that the Commission restrict imports of Brazilian soybeans through mandatory certification proving they do not cause deforestation. MEP Delara Burckhardt said voluntary measures had failed.

Brazil supplies a large share of EU soybean and soymeal imports, so a certification requirement could cut EU demand for Brazilian beans and push prices lower. The request is not yet law, which limits the near-term impact.
