Rail backlogs delay food shipments in U.S.

Rail backlogs in the United States are delaying shipments of grain, flour and corn syrup, according to food and grain companies testifying before the Surface Transportation Board. Landus Co-operative said rail transit times have more than doubled and that country elevators have waited up to 20 days for rail cars.

Railroads blamed recent extreme weather and a surge in shipping demand.

Grain stuck in country elevators and delayed export loadings tightens physical supply at some destinations while depressing local cash bids at origin. Feed buyers may face uneven availability and higher delivered costs.
