Indian Union Minister Piyush Goyal said there is no proposal to lift export restrictions on wheat, rice and sugar. He said India will not import wheat or sugar.
The curbs were put in place to control rising domestic prices, including the wheat export ban from May 2022 and the non-basmati rice ban from July 2023.
Keeping Indian export curbs in place removes a large volume of rice and wheat from global trade, supporting world prices. The absence of imports means India will not add supply to its own market.
