# Ukraine's Record Sunflower Harvest Drives Down Seed and Oil Prices Across Black Sea Region

*A sharply larger 2026 Ukrainian sunflower crop, combined with war-damaged crushing capacity and elevated logistics costs, is pushing domestic seed purchase prices and sunflower oil values lower as the harvest accelerates into early October.*

Ukraine's rapidly advancing sunflower harvest is triggering a build-up in seed supply that is pressing domestic purchase prices and sunflower oil values lower across the Black Sea region, according to CMB News.

As of 29 September, Ukraine had harvested sunflower from 1.66 million hectares, representing approximately one-third of the planted area, with 3.36 million tons produced at an average yield of 2.0 t/ha, CMB News reported. The national crop is forecast at 13–13.5 million tons for 2026, markedly above last season's 10.5 million tons.

Ukrainian sunflower seed purchase prices fell by another 500 UAH/t over the last week to around 17,000–19,000 UAH/t including VAT, equivalent to roughly $335–370/t excluding VAT with delivery to crushing plants, CMB News said. Domestic demand prices for sunflower oil were reported as weak at $1,090–1,100/t delivered to Danube ports, with FCA plant indications around $1,050–1,100/t.

War-related damage has left some crushing plants offline this season. CMB News noted that processing capacity reductions, combined with constrained logistics, risk moving the market into a pronounced surplus where seed supply outstrips nearby crush demand. Processors that initially paid firm prices to secure early stocks are now cutting bids as plant queues lengthen.

Russian sunflower oil values also declined, losing a further $40–50/t over the week to approximately $1,220–1,230/t FOB, according to CMB News, driven by larger sunflower production and export restrictions via Black Sea ports. The source said cheaper Russian oil is intensifying competition for Ukrainian-origin product in key importing markets.

Export demand prices for Ukrainian sunflower seed delivered to Bulgaria were described as nominally steady at $550–560/t, but actual flows remain constrained by licensing requirements and higher minimum export prices set by Ukraine's Ministry of Economy, which are only expected to be adjusted on 10 October, CMB News reported.

Dry and warm conditions across major producing oblasts — including Mykolaiv, Dnipro and Kirovohrad — are supporting rapid fieldwork. CMB News cited forecasts for predominantly clear skies and moderate daytime temperatures near 19–21°C over the following 7–10 days, increasing the likelihood that the bulk of the crop will reach the market in a compressed window.

Despite the harvest pressure, CMB News said a sizeable share of farmers intend to delay substantial seed sales into the second half of the season, hoping for a price rebound once immediate harvest-time supply pressures ease.

Danube port infrastructure, a key outlet for Ukrainian sunflower oil exports, has suffered from repeated attacks, further constraining oil export flows and capping domestic demand prices, CMB News reported. Rising freight rates and war-risk surcharges were cited as additional factors limiting traders' ability to raise domestic bids.
