# Philippines Bans UK Beef Imports After BSE Case Detected in Scotland

*The Philippines has imposed a ban on beef imports from the United Kingdom following the detection of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in a cow in Scotland, which was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health by the UK's chief veterinary officer.*

The Philippines has banned beef imports from the United Kingdom after a case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) — commonly known as mad cow disease — was detected in a cow in Scotland, according to Food Safety News.

The ban was triggered by a report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) by Dr. Christine Middlemiss, chief veterinary officer at the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), confirming the BSE case.

The Philippines' action follows the standard international protocol of restricting livestock product imports from countries that report confirmed BSE cases to WOAH. No timeline for the duration of the ban was specified in the available evidence.
