# European Cross-Border Food Fraud Reports Fall in August 2026

*The number of suspected food fraud cases shared between European countries dropped to 165 in August 2026, down from 207 in July, though the figure was similar to the 166 recorded in August 2025, according to Food Safety News.*

Suspected cases of food fraud shared between European countries fell in August 2026 compared with the previous month, though the figure remained broadly in line with the same period a year earlier, according to a report published by Food Safety News on 2 October 2026.

There were 165 cross-border fraud reports in August 2026, down from 207 in July and 215 in June. Earlier in the year, monthly totals stood at 150 in May, 188 in April, 204 in March, 159 in February, and 189 in January. For context, the equivalent August 2025 figure was 166.

Eleven of the August 2026 alerts involved the United States. Food Safety News reported that the majority of those alerts were related to supplements. One alert concerned an approval number that did not match the information on the label and health certificate; a consignment of squid was detained at the border as a result and subsequently re-dispatched.

The report also noted a separate recall in Finland of a supplement originating from the United States because of high nicotinic acid levels.
