# Black Sea Drone Strikes on Cargo Vessels Drive European Corn Above €300/t and Lift Wheat Prices

*Drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea this week, including strikes that sank at least one vessel off Bulgaria and Romania, have disrupted key grain export corridors and pushed Euronext front-month corn above €300/t for the first time, with wheat futures also firming. The incidents compound an already tight European grain balance marked by sharply reduced French corn output and historically low projected ending stocks for 2026/27.*

Drone strikes on commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea have sharply escalated geopolitical risk around key grain export corridors, triggering a jump in European corn futures and firming wheat prices, according to CMB News.

## Attacks Confirmed by Bulgarian and Romanian Authorities

Bulgarian and Romanian authorities confirmed a series of drone attacks on merchant vessels operating in their exclusive economic zones this week, including strikes that sank at least one cargo ship and damaged others, prompting large-scale search and rescue operations. The incidents follow multiple earlier attacks in October, heightening fears that the conflict in Ukraine is increasingly spilling into NATO-controlled waters, CMB News reported.

The affected sea lanes are critical for regional grain and vegetable oil exports from Ukrainian Danube ports and Russian Black Sea terminals, which have supplied importers in North Africa, the Middle East and the European Union throughout the conflict.

## Corn Futures Break €300/t Threshold

European corn futures on Euronext (MATIF) reacted strongly as supply and logistics risks converged. According to CMB News, the front-month November 2026 corn contract closed above €300/t for the first time this week, gaining around €14 in a single session. Deferred contracts gained less, widening the inverse and signalling strong demand for nearby physical supplies.

CMB News analysts linked the rally to a combination of sharply reduced French corn production and historically low projected ending stocks for 2026/27, together with uncertainty over Black Sea shipping. FranceAgriMer has cut France's grain corn crop to roughly half of last season and now sees 2026/27 corn ending stocks just above 1.1 million tonnes, implying only about 50–55 days of use, the report stated.

## Wheat Also Firmer; Polish Prices in Focus

Euronext and UK wheat futures also firmed, supported by the same geopolitical risk and updated French balance sheets showing lower soft-wheat ending stocks, CMB News said. In Poland, where banks have already forecast a 17–28% year-on-year rise in average farm-gate wheat prices in Q4 2026, the Black Sea incidents reinforce expectations of elevated and volatile price levels into early 2027.

## Supply Chain and Feed Industry Implications

While ports remain technically open, CMB News reported that shipowners may slow or re-route traffic away from the most exposed zones off Bulgaria and Romania, affecting transits to and from Ukrainian Danube outlets and some Russian ports. Higher war-risk insurance premiums are also a prospect.

For feed mills and livestock producers in Poland and Central Europe, the report noted that importers relying on Ukrainian corn and feed grains via Black Sea-linked flows may face tighter nearby availability and higher basis levels, increasing procurement costs, especially if competition intensifies for remaining EU domestic supplies.

Barley and other feed grains could see substitution demand if corn supplies tighten or become more expensive, the report added, while any sustained disruption to Black Sea traffic could also affect sunflower seed and oil exports, indirectly influencing feed and crush margins across the wider region.

## Market Outlook

CMB News said markets are likely to remain headline-driven in the near term, with further news on Black Sea security and potential NATO or regional responses driving intraday volatility. Any further escalation in attacks on shipping or port infrastructure would likely extend the rally and could tighten basis levels for physical grain across Central Europe, the report concluded.
